Voelkner Nets Five as Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Purchase

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Mar. 21, 2017) – Senior Abby Voelkner (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) totaled five points on five goals as the Centenary University women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest to Purchase College, 17-7 on Tuesday afternoon.

Zoe Hines totaled eight points on seven goals and one assist for the Panthers who improve to 1-0 overall. Freshman Juliana Arias (Dover, N.J. / Morris Hills) totaled two points on a goal and assist for the Cyclones who fall to 1-3 overall.

Voelkner helped Centenary rebound from an early 3-0 deficit, as she netted back-to- back goals that cut the Panthers lead to 3-2 with 12:43 remaining in the opening stanza. After three unanswered goals over the next three minutes pushed the Panthers back in front at 6-2, Arias stopped the Purchase run with the first goal of her career and the Cyclones remained within striking distance at 6-3.

After sophomore Nicole Soriero (Monroe Township, N.J. / Monroe Township) scored a goal, the Panthers responded with two more scores to extend their lead to the largest of the game at 9-4. Voelkner completed a hat-trick in the first half, scoring with just 17 seconds remaining off a feed from senior Priscilla Ortiz (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls). Centenary trailed 9-5 at intermission.

In the second half, the Panthers opened with six unanswered goals and never looked back. Centenary finally found the back of the cage when Voelkner again scored back-to-back goals, including an assisted score from Arias.

Voelker added four groundballs and four draw controls, while Ortiz totaled five groundballs, four caused turnovers and five draw controls. Sophomore Krysta Astengo (Clifton, N.J. / Clifton) finished with three caused turnovers and two groundballs, while senior Morgan Haller (Stroudsburg, Pa. / Pocono Mountain East) and freshman Cailin O'Hara (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks West) both added three groundballs apiece. Sophomore Renee Hack (Old Bridge, N.J. / Bishop George Ahr) made 11 saves and scooped up two groundballs in the loss for Centenary.  Hack moved into fifth all-time in saves at Centenary, as she needed just five saves to crack the top five entering today's contest and now needs just four saves to move into fourth all-time, surpassing Leslie Ann Pritchard (2008-10).

Head Coach Julie Moir and the Cyclones will return to action in Immaculata, Pa. on Saturday, Mar. 25th against the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University at 1:00 p.m.
