Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short Against Immaculata on Senior Day

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Apr. 16, 2016)- Senior Kristen Rabenstein (Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove) and junior Abby Voelkner (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) combined for nine goals as the Centenary College women's lacrosse team had their comeback efforts thwarted in the 15-14 loss to Immaculata University on Senior Day.

Hannah Verrecchia totaled seven goals for the Mighty Macs who improve to 6-8 overall and 5-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Rabenstein added five groundballs,
five draw controls and three caused turnovers for the Cyclones who fall to 5-7 overall and 4-2 in the CSAC.

The Mighty Macs set the pace from the opening draw control, as Verrecchia and Shannon Neill combined for eight of Immaculata's 11 first half goals. In fact, Verrecchia scored three of the first four goals in the opening 10 minutes. Rabenstein netted two free position goals as the Cyclones trailed 11-3 at halftime.

In the second half, Voelkner scored all five of her goals as the Cyclones made a furious comeback. Centenary only allowed two turnovers in a second half where they scored 10 goals and nearly erased the Mighty Macs lead.

The Cyclones stormed all the way back with senior Devin Sutko (Cinnaminson, N.J. / Cinnaminson), Rabenstein and Voelkner each scored during a three unanswered run, which cut the deficit to 15-14 with 3:54 remaining. Sutko won the very next draw control and then passed the ball to Voelkner for the game trying goal. Voelkner ripped a shot that was stopped by Immaculata goalie Elizabeth McBride. McBride secured the ball and the Mighty Macs were able to run the clock out for the victory.

Sutko added three goals, while fellow classmate Carlie Schmitt (Stewartstown, Pa. / Kennard-Dale) totaled two goals.  Junior Priscilla Ortiz (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) finished with five groundballs and two caused turnovers, while freshman Renee Hack (Old Bridge, N.J. / Bishop George Ahr) made six saves and scooped up five groundballs.

Before the game, Coach Moir honored her seven senior student-athletes. Those honorees were Jannery Cuervo (North Bergen, N.J. / North Bergen), Kelly Conklin (Monroe Township, N.J. / Monroe Township), Rabenstein, Jessica Hervis (Union City, N.J. / Union City), Erica Tripp (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon) and Sutko.

Head Coach Julie Moir and the Cyclones will return to action on Tues. Apr. 19, hosting the Giants of Keystone College at 4:00 p.m.
