George Grabs 16 Boards as Women’s Basketball Grounded by Marywood

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Feb. 10, 2016) – On Wednesday evening, the Centenary College women's basketball team suffered a tough loss to the Pacers of Marywood University, 74-58.

The game didn't start as the Cyclones had planned, as Marywood went on a 16-0 run to take a commanding 18-2 lead. Centenary was able to get a couple of baskets back before the quarter ended with the Pacers holding a 22-9 advantage

In the second quarter, Centenary quickly closed the gap to within six points with the help of junior Kelsey Barofski (White Township, N.J. / Belvidere), who totaled 10 points and four rebounds in the game. However, Marywood's Lisa Steakin hit a big three-ball to put them up 11 towards the end of the first half at 43-32.

In the second half, the Cyclones took it to the Pacers early, as they got the deficit to within seven points behind the play of junior Mallory George (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston), who racked up another double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Marywood didn't give the Cyclones an inch, as they knocked in baskets every time Centenary got close. Senior Ally Fugnitti (Wood-Ridge, N.J. / Wood-Ridge) hit a big three to pull the Cyclones to a six-point deficit with one minute remaining in the third quarter, before another quick basket by the Pacers stifled the Cyclones comeback attempt.

Marywood outscored the Cyclones 18-10 in the final quarter, while running away with the contest behind the play of Alexa Gerchman, who finished with a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds. Centenary tried to get back into the game, but costly turnovers didn't give them a chance to accomplish that.

Fugnitti finished with 14 points, sophomore Nicole Cartaino (Midland Park, N.J. / Midland Park) scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds, while fellow classmate Rachel Edwards (Phillipsburg, N.J. / Phillipsburg) knocked down two triples for six points in the game.

Head Coach Andrea Kendall and the Cyclones will play their home-finale against another top-seeded team in the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, Coach Kendall will honor seniors Jere St. Lewis (Bensalem, Pa. / Bensalem), Angela Randle (East Orange, N.J. / Marist) and Fugnitti.
