Women’s Basketball Falls Short against Gwynedd-Mercy on Senior Day

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Feb. 13, 2016)- Senior Ally Fugnitti (Wood-Ridge, N.J. / Wood-Ridge) finished with 17 points  and six rebounds as the Centenary College women's basketball team fell short to Gwynedd-Mercy University on Senior Day.

Charlotte Kucowski and Julianna Hoisington both finished with 18 points apiece as the Griffins improve to 19-4 and 13-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Junior Melissa Rabe (Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley)  finished with 11 points and seven rebounds for the Cyclones who fall to 13-10 overall and 8-6 in the CSAC.

After Coach Kendall honored Fugnitti, Angela Randle (East Orange, N.J. / Marist) and Jere St. Lewis (Bensalem, Pa. / Bensalem) before the game, the Cyclones came out with a purpose as they closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 16-10.

The Griffins attempted to pull away multiple times in the contest but Centenary forced Gwynedd-Mercy into 18 turnovers. Sophomore Rachel Edwards (Phillipsburg, N.J. / Phillipsburg) finished with four steals to go along with her 10 points. The Cyclones also edged the Griffins from the three point line as Centenary shot 36.8% compared to 21.1% for Gwnyedd-Mercy.

Centenary continued to stay within striking distance as they made a push in the fourth quarter. After sophomore Nicole Cartaino (Midland Park, N.J. / Midland Park) completed a three point play and junior Mallory George (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) sank two free throws, Gwynedd-Mercy held a 66-60 advantage with 27 seconds remaining.

On the next trip down the floor, Fugnitti made a three pointer to cut the lead to just three at 66-63 with 16 seconds remaining. After the Griffins went 1-for-2 at the line, Edwards took a three from the right side in but the shot clanked off the rim and Gwynedd-Mercy iced the game from the charity stripe.

Cartaino finished with nine points and three rebounds, while George finished with six points, seven rebounds and five assists. Nicole Dombrowski finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Griffins.

Head Coach Andrea Kendall and the Cyclones will return to action in Radnor, Pa. on Wednesday, Feb. 17th against the Cavaliers of Cabrini College at 6:30 p.m.
