HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Oct. 29, 2016)- Senior
Luis Marin (Union City, N.J. / Union Hill) totaled five points on two goals and one assist as the Centenary University men's soccer team secured the top seed in next's week Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament with a 6-0 rout of the Griffins of Gwynedd-Mercy University on Senior Day.
Sophomore
Josh Weiss (Hackettstown, N.J. / Hackettstown) netted two goals for the Cyclones who improve to 11-5-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the CSAC. Ryan Oyola made six saves for the Griffins who fall to 9-10 overall and 5-4 in the CSAC.
Marin netted his first goal of the afternoon in the 18
th minute, as he played a deflected ball which volleyed onto his foot and then into the net for the score. Marin would be the facilitator on the second goal of the afternoon, as junior
Richy Castro (Landing, N.J. / Roxbury) scored in the 37
th minute to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.
Centenary would increase their advantage to 3-0 just before halftime, as Weiss scored off an assist from fellow classmate
Chris Cameron (Waldwick, N.J. / Waldwick).
In the second half, the Cyclones kept their foot on the gas with three unanswered goals. Marin opened the second stanza, scoring off an assist from Castro in the 63
rd minute. Sophomore
Roger Fernandez (Succcasunna, N.J. / Roxbury) would have a hand into both of the final two goals, as he assisted on Weiss's goal in the 77
th minute and netted a goal off an assist from junior
Justin White (Minehill, N.J. / Dover) in the 82
nd minute.
Centenary edged Gwynedd-Mercy on shots (33-8), shots on goal (15-8) and corner kicks (8-2). Weiss and Castro both tallied a team-high seven shots, while sophomore
Devon Warne (Belvidere, N.J. / Belvidere) made five saves in the victory. Chris Black and Hunter Bishop both recorded two shots apiece for GMU.
