Weiss Lone Goal Vaults Men’s Soccer into CSAC Final

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Nov. 3, 2016)- Sophomore Josh Weiss (Hackettstown, N.J. / Hackettstown) netted the game-winner in the 60th minute as the top-seeded Centenary University men's soccer team earned its second trip in four seasons into the Colonial States Athletic Conference title game with a 1-0 victory over Neumann University on Thursday afternoon.

Junior Richy Castro (Landing, N.J. / Roxbury) assisted on the game-winner as the Cyclones improve to 12-5-1 overall and will now face the third seeded Cavaliers of Cabrini University on Saturday. Shane Smith made seven saves for the Knights who finish the season at 8-12 overall.

In an extremely even first half, Centenary edged Neumann on shots (8-6) and sophomore Devon Warne (Belvidere, N.J. / Belvidere) made four tremendous saves to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

The Cyclones would turn up the intensity in the second half, outshooting the Knights 15-4. Centenary finally broke through in the 60th minute, as Weiss stepped in between a pass and dribbled it down towards the Neumann net. Weiss tapped the ball to Castro just outside the 18-yard box; Castro took two dribbles and tapped the ball back to Weiss who chipped the ball past the keeper for the score.

Junior Justin White (Minehill, N.J. / Dover) recorded a game-high five shots, while both freshman Matt Miller (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) and senior Luis Marin (Union City, N.J. / Union Hill) recorded four shots apiece. Christian Cortese tallied three shots in the loss for Neumann

The Cyclones will play in their only second CSAC title game in history and the first to be held in Hackettstown. Centenary won the championship in 2013 as a #2 seed, defeating the Pacers of Marywood University, 1-0.

Head Coach Keith O'Connor and the top seeded Cyclones will return to action on Saturday, November 5th, hosting the third seeded Cavaliers of Cabrini University in the 2016 Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament Final at 1:00 p.m.
