Three Second Half Goals Propel Men’s Soccer to 3-1 Comeback Victory

HACKETTSTOWN N.J. (Sept. 23, 2015) – The Cyclones (3-4) pulled off an inspiring 3-1 victory in there home opener as they defeated the Devils of Fairleigh Dickinson University at Florham (3-4-1) on Wednesday at the J.E Reeves Jr. Field.

Things were looking bleak for the Cyclones as they were being outplayed for a majority of the game with senior Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Taylor Allderdice) having to make over 10 saves in the game. The turning point came in the 70th minute when junior Chris Bonilla (Newark, N.J. / St. Benedict's Prep) unfortunately went down with a serious injury. The Cyclones then came back out on to the field and looked like a completely different team. Centenary trailed 1-0 and within a minute after the injury stoppage, senior Nick DePasquale (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River East) got the Cyclones on the board with his first goal of the season in a bang-bang type of fashion, as the ball deflected off of numerous players in the box and eventually came to DePasquale who shot it into a wide-open net.

The Cyclones weren't close to being done though, as a minute later, junior Luis Marin (Union City, N.J. / Union Hill) sent a perfect thru-ball down the line to senior Makenson Joseph (Haute-Feuille, Merchant Dessalines / Irvington High School), where Joseph then sent another great ball across the field to a wide-open sophomore Daniel Lamanna (Roxbury, N.J. / Roxbury). Lamanna then made no mistake in firing the ball past Devils keeper Nick Mihalik to give Centenary a 2-1 lead.

A minute and a half after Centenary took the lead, they decided they weren't done scoring as sophomore Justin White (Minehill, N.J. / Dover) sent a great thru-ball straight up the middle to Joseph, giving him a breakaway. Mihalik came out to challenge Joseph, but he easily shot the ball past the keeper to give the Cyclones a commanding 3-1 lead with only 16 minutes to play.

Centenary was then able to drop back defensively, and limited the Devils opportunities for the remainder of the game.

Head Coach Keith O'Connor and the Cyclones will travel to play Carin University on Saturday, September 26th at 1:00 p.m.
