Bridgewater, NJ – The Centenary baseball team completed the sweep of Cairn University in this afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference double header. With the win, the Cyclones improve to 17-14 overall and 8-10 in CSAC play, while the Highlanders fall to 8-25 on the season and 1-14 in league play.
Centenary 3, Cairn 1In game one, Centenary went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second after
Nick Daniele sent a triple down the left field line to score teammate
Ryan Kanner who got on with a single to left. Daniele came around to score on a groundout to third base by
Kevin Litus for the 2-0 advantage.
In the third frame,
Ryan Caparoni started things up with a lead-off double to center, followed by a single from
Dave Raifsnider to push Caparoni across the plate for a 3-0 lead.
The Highlanders would get one run in the fourth to spoil the shutout but that would be the extent of their scoring as Centenary took game one by a final of 3-1.
Senior
Mitchell Renz threw a complete game giving up just one run off three hits, while striking out nine Highlanders.
Raifsnider and Kanner belted out a pair of hits, while
Nick Ortiz, Daniele,
Chris Ohlweiler, and Caparoni each added a hit in the contest.
Centenary 9, Cairn 2Cairn opened the scoring in the first inning after Joey Nieves-Markee's double to center put him in scoring position. Nieves-Markee eventually scored advancing on a pickoff at second base.
Centenary would get that run back and five more off three hits and two Highlander errors.
Kevin Litus flied out to center for the sacrifice as
Nick Daniele tagged up to tie the game one apiece.
With the bases loaded,
Ryan Caparoni was struck with a pitch allowing
Sean Hunter to cross the plate. A second error allowed
Dave Raifsnider to reach safely scoring
Nick Ortiz and
Joe Forcellini. The Cyclones continued to rally as
Ryan Kanner singled to drive in Caparoni, while Daniele got up a second time and singled pushing Raifsnider across for the sixth run of the inning (6-1).
Centenary would tack on three more in the third after Forcellini's RBI single scored Ortiz and Centenary's lead slugger Caparoni blasted a homerun over the right field wall for his 10
th long ball this season.
The Highlanders added one run in the seventh frame, but the gap created by the Cyclones in the second and third inning was too much of a deficit as Centenary walked away with a 9-2 victory.
Senior
Nick Cavanaugh started the game giving up one run off two hits, while striking out four. Several senior pitchers got their chance to throw one last game as
Joe Talnagi faced three batters,
Zack Seres faced four,
Edward Casiano faced two,
Eric Thorpe faced one,
Danny Derner faced three and Centenary's lead closer
Chad Frankenfield faced one and ended the game with a strike out.
Centenary will now wait to see how the rest of the conference plays out to view their chances at a CSAC playoff run or wait for a possible ECAC bid.
Prior to the start of the game, the Centenary athletic department honored 19 seniors for their commitment and dedication to the baseball program the past four years. A photo gallery of today's game will be posted by Monday afternoon.
