HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – (Nov. 3, 2015)- On Tuesday afternoon at J.E. Reeves Junior Field, the fourth seeded Centenary College men's soccer team was defeated by the fifth seeded Neumann Knights, 2-1, in the Quarterfinals of the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament.
The Knights only needed two goals to advance, in a game that has become a rivalry over the years, and they got those two goals in the first 12 minutes of the game, which forced Centenary to play catch up for the remainder of the match.
The Cyclones started slowly but began putting pressure on Knight's keeper Shane Smith midway through the first stanza. Centenary was unable to break through, leaving them with a 2-0 deficit heading into halftime.
The Cyclones came out in the second half with a renewed sense of urgency and controlled possession of the ball. Neumann couldn't muster one shot on goal, while freshman
Roger Fernandez (Succasunna, N.J. / Roxbury) pulled the Cyclones to within one in the 77
th minute. Senior
Abiodun Lawal (Irvington, N.J. / Irvington) was robbed at point blank range by Smith, but Fernandez was there with a perfectly timed slide to push the ball into the net.
Unfortunately that's as close as the Cyclones would get, as the Knights pulled almost all of their players back, which secured victory for Neumann. They will move on to play top seeded Cabrini College in the Semi-Finals on Thursday
Centenary finished 2015 with an 11-8 overall record on the year, while senior
Justin White (Minehill, N.J. / Dover) and freshman
Josh Weiss (Hackettstown, N.J. / Hackettstown) tied for the team lead in goals with seven apiece. Senior
Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Taylor Allderdice) finished the year with an impressive .802 save percentage and goals against average of 1.25. He allowed only 23 goals in 19 games, which also included five shutouts over 247 shots faced over the course of the season.
