HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Centenary University volleyball team hit .292 with a season-high 19 service aces en route to its first win of the year, a 3-0 victory over Penn State Lehigh Valley on Wednesday evening.
PSU Lehigh Valley jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set. Three kills from
Mya Burnett helped the Cyclones take an 8-7 edge. The two teams battled back-and-forth as a service ace and a kill from
Alyssa Bizzarro allowed the home team to take a 20-13 advantage. Centenary eventually closed out the first set, 25-15 on a kill from
Martina Josifoska.
A pair of service aces from
Kim Stallworth gave the Cyclones a 4-0 advantage in the second set. A service ace from Bizzarro extended the home team's advantage to 12-1. Back-to-back service aces from
Vanessa Pagano put the Cyclones on top, 20-5. The two teams traded points before a kill from
Pamela Mejia closed out a 25-12 second set win for Centenary.
A couple of kills from
Cameron Fulcher gave Centenary a 5-1 lead early in the third set. Three straight service aces from
Isabel Moreira gave the home team a 15-9 edge. The two teams continued to battle before a kill from Bizzarro closed out a 25-13 set win.
Burnett led the Cyclones with 16 kills on the night while Bizzarro contributed a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs and also added three service aces. Josifoska had 13 digs and tied for the team-lead with four service aces. Stallworth finished with 24 assists, seven digs and three service aces.
Taz Moore had five kills and seven digs for PSU Lehigh Valley.
Centenary is back in action when it visits King's on Friday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m.
