WILKES-BARRE, Pa. –
Kim Stallworth had her first career double-double to lead the Centenary University volleyball team in a 3-0 loss at King's College (Pa.) on Friday night.
The Monarchs battled for a 25-19, 25-21 and 25-16 win over the visitors.
Back-to-back service aces from
Alyssa Bizzarro allowed the Cyclones to take an early 7-3 lead in the first set. A kill from
Mya Burnett extended the Centenary advantage to 10-7. The two teams went back-and-forth as a kill from
Pamela Mejia put the visitors ahead, 17-15. King's scored 10 of the final 12 points in the set to secure the 25-19 win.
The second set saw the two sides trading points early on. Burnett's kill from
Vanessa Pagano gave Centenary a 6-5 edge. The Cyclones and Monarchs continued to battle as another Burnett kill allowed the visitors to hold a 15-14 advantage. Tied at 21-21, the home team scored the final four points for a 25-21 win.
King's quickly opened up a 10-3 lead to start the third set. The home team extended its advantage to 16-11 on a service error by the Cyclones. Centenary pulled to within three, 19-16 on a kill from Burnett. King's closed out the set on a 6-0 run for a 25-16 win.
Burnett had a season-high 18 kills in the match for the Cyclones while Stallworth contributed 19 assists and 13 digs. Bizzarro had 13 digs and six kills while
Asia Logan added nine digs.
Joy Kindall led King's with 11 kills.
Centenary is right back at it as it travels to Keystone on Saturday, Sept. 17 for a 1 p.m. match.
