Butcher's Five Goals Help Women's Lacrosse Beat Eastern Mennonite

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Freshman Lily Butcher scored a season-high five goals to lead the Centenary University women's lacrosse team to a 13-9 win over Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclones picked up their first win of the season and gifted head coach Chelsea Gummerson with her first coaching victory.

Centenary scored the first four goals of the game and took the early lead. Eastern Mennonite scored the final three goals of the first period, but the Cyclones held a 4-3 lead after one.

The Cyclones and Royals traded goals throughout the second period. Butcher and senior Christine Manser each scored their second goals of the game in that 15-minute stretch while senior Amanda Tietjen scored on a free position goal.

Centenary took a 7-5 lead at the half.

The Cyclones scored the first three goals of the third period and pushed its lead to 10-5 with 5:34 to go in the period. Butcher and Manser completed their hat tricks with their third of the day.

KC Argueta-Rivas scored the final two goals of the period for Eastern Mennonite. Centenary led 10-7 with 15 minutes to go in the game.

Butcher scored two goals in the fourth to help Centenary close out the 13-9 win.

Junior Jenyfer Pereira started the game and made three saves to earn the win in goal for the Cyclones. Freshman Chloe Neubauer saw the second half in cage and made four stops. Cristal Narcisco had 11 saves in the loss for Eastern Mennonite.

Butcher finished with five goals on seven shots for the Cyclones and added three draw controls. Manser added four goals and three ground balls while freshman Brooke Bode had a goal, two assists, six ground balls and three draw controls.

Argueta-Rivas had four goals for Eastern Mennonite.

Centenary is back in action on Saturday, April 2 when it hosts Wilson at 1 p.m.
