HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Four players scored in double figures to lead a balanced attack as the Centenary University men's basketball team earned a 91-66 win over the College of Mt. St. Vincent in the season opener on Friday night.
Centenary quickly opened up an 11-2 lead as
Tyler White nailed a jumper at 17:28. Mt. St. Vincent responded with a 9-2 run of its own and pulled to within two, 13-11 with 12:51 showing on the clock.
A three-pointer from
Billy Veras and a lay-up from
Colin Gery helped the Cyclones grab a 20-15 edge with 10:46 to go.
A 6-0 run by the Dolphins, highlighted by a triple from
Aaron Drab gave the visitors a 25-22 lead at the 7:24 mark.
Four straight points from
Trevor Giordano put the Cyclones back on top, 26-25 with 6:18 showing on the clock.
With the Dolphins leading 29-28, the Cyclones used a 14-2 run to close out the first stanza on a positive note and took a 42-31 lead at the break.
Aalim Jones and Veras each had four points in that stretch.
A lay-up by Veras early in the second half extended the Centenary advantage to 46-35.
Giordano knocked down a triple at 13:42 as the home team held a 52-37 lead.
A 6-0 run that included a jumper from
Shawn Falk gave the Cyclones a 69-46 lead with 7:47 to go in the game.
The two teams continued to battle as an
Aidan Ryan lay-up at 1:45 gave Centenary a 87-65 lead.
Four straight points from
Sean Yancey closed out a 91-66 win.
Centenary shot 51.5% from the floor and made 14-of-21 chances from the foul line. The Dolphins shot 34.7% from the floor and made 11-of-18 from the charity stripe. Centenary held a 50-37 edge in the rebounding battle.
Veras paced the Cyclones with 18 points and eight rebounds while
Harrison Lucibello had 14 points and seven rebounds. Giordano and Gery chipped in 13 points apiece.
Darab had 17 points for Mt. St. Vincent.
Centenary is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 13 when it hosts Ithaca at 1 p.m.
