HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Wrestling fans got their first look at the 2022-23 Centenary University wrestling team as the Cyclones hosted their Public Eliminations on Friday night.
Eleven Cyclones saw time on the mats as the Cyclones worked towards setting their starting line-up for the upcoming season.
The evening started with freshman
Jack Thode securing an 11-2 major decision over junior
Justin Gerkhardt at 125-pounds.
Next up at 133-pounds freshman
Danny Haws pinned fellow freshman
Miguel Lopez in 2:03.
Junior
Xavier Pena (141-pounds), freshman
Mark Venson (149-pounds) and graduate student
Cameron Bruffy (157-pounds) were all unchallenged at their respective weight classes.
While senior
Perry Maio (165-pounds) and sophomore
Angelo Piazza (174-pounds) were unchallenged at their respective weight classes, the pair wrestled an exhibition match against each other. Piazza used a pair of third period takedowns to secure a 7-3 decision.
At 184-pounds it was senior
Justin Hopman battling sophomore
Aaron Llanas. Hopman jumped out to an early 8-1 lead after one period and rolled to a 16-5 major decision.
Junior
Keevon Berry (197-pounds) and freshman
Dalton Deevey (285-pounds) were unchallenged at their respective weights. The two wrestled an exhibition match with Berry earning the pin in 2:15.
Haws then returned to the mat to battle senior
Aruki Revi Jr. in a second match at 133-pounds. After a scoreless first period, Haws opened up a 4-0 lead eventually claimed a 6-3 decision.
The evening ended with a pair of alumni matches.
Will Livingston, who was Centenary's first All-American in 2010, took on
Michael Foca, who was an NWCA Academic All-American. Foca had a 2-1 lead after one period, but Livingston responded with the only three points of the second period and eventually secured a 4-3 decision.
In the second alumni match,
Jon Stillo who was a three-time Academic All-American took on
Jacy Jones, who was a two-time Academic All-American. Jones had a 3-2 lead after two periods and used a four-point third period to claim a 7-2 decision.
Centenary kicks off the 2022-23 regular season on Sunday, Nov. 6 when the Cyclones take part in the East Stroudsburg Open.
