HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – A total team effort led the Centenary University volleyball team to a 3-1 win over The City College of New York (CCNY) on Friday evening. The Cyclones won their third straight match and picked up their seventh win of the season.
Centenary jumped out to an early lead with a 25-22 win in the first set. CCNY evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-12 victory in the second set. The Cyclones bounced back with 25-20 and 25-13 set wins to secure the contest.
CCNY jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set before the Cyclones responded with a 6-0 run and took a 10-9 edge.
Asia Logan had four straight service aces in that run. The two teams continued to battle as a service ace from
Alyssa Bizzarro gave the home team a 16-14 advantage. The two teams traded points before an error by the Beavers gave the Cyclones a 25-22 set win.
Bianka Catral had five kills in the second set to lead CCNY to the 25-12 set victory.
A service ace from
Martina Josifoska helped the home team open up a 6-3 lead to start the third set. A service ace from
Isabel Moreira increased the Centenary advantage to 13-7. Kills by
Mya Burnett on two points put the Cyclones on top, 17-14. Back-to-back attack errors by the Beavers closed out a 25-20 set win for the home team.
Centenary quickly opened up a 5-1 lead in the fourth. The Beavers got a kill from
Arianna Rivas before the Cyclones rattled off eight straight points and took a 13-2 advantage. Josifoska had a service ace during that stretch while Burnett added a pair of kills. A kill from
Jessica Simpson pushed the home team's lead to 19-7. The two teams continued to battle as the Cyclones eventually closed out a 25-13 set win.
Burnett continued her strong play at the net with 17 kills and three blocks while Bizzarro chipped in 10 kills and 14 digs.
Kim Stallworth dished out 19 assists and 11 digs while
Vanessa Pagano added 17 assists. Josifoska had a career-high 31 digs and three service aces.
Aubrey Jones had 28 assists and nine digs for CCNY.
Centenary looks to continue its strong play of late as it hosts Lehman for a doubleheader tomorrow at 11 and 1 p.m.
