HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. –
Mya Burnett had eight of her team-high 20 kills in the final two sets to lead the Centenary University volleyball team to a 3-2 comeback win over Marywood University on Wednesday night in Atlantic East play.
The two teams battled through 25 ties and 14 lead changes before the Cyclones were able to capture a 25-23, 22-25, 18-25, 30-28, 16-14 win. The victory gave the Cyclones their first conference win since the 2015 season. It was Centenary's sixth win of the season, the most by the program since the 2012 squad won eight.
The Cyclones trailed 12-7 in the first set before using an 8-3 run to tie things up at 15-15. Burnett and
Jessica Simpson each had a kill in that stretch. Marywood went back up on top, 20-17. A pair of kills and a block from Burnett and
Cameron Fulcher gave the home team a 21-20 edge. Eventually a kill from Burnett closed out the 25-23 set win.
Mikayla Meek had six kills in a 25-22 second set win by Marywood.
Meek added six more kills in the third set as the 25-18 victory gave Marywood a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle that required extra points to settle it. The two teams traded points before Centenary took a 24-20 lead on a Marywood service error. Four straight points from the Pacers tied the set at 24-24. The Cyclones and Pacers continued to go back-and-forth as twice the visitors went up by one and the Cyclones battled back. Centenary eventually claimed the 30-28 set win on a pair of Pacer errors.
Marywood took an early 5-3 lead in the fifth set on a block. The Pacers pushed their lead to 7-4 on an error by the Cyclones. Centenary responded with a 5-0 run and took a 9-7 lead.
Asia Logan had a service ace in that stretch. The two teams continued to battle as Marywood took a 14-12 lead on a kill from Meek. Centenary rallied to score the final four points of the set and earned the 16-14 win. Burnett secured the final two points on kills.
Burnett had 20 kills and three blocks to lead the Cyclones.
Alyssa Bizzarro finished with
12 kills and 13 digs while
Kim Stallworth dished out 21 assists and seven digs.
Vanessa Pagano added 14 assists while
Martina Josifoska contributed 18 digs.
Meek led Marywood with 23 kills.
Centenary is back in action on Friday, Oct. 14 when it hosts CCNY at 7 p.m.
