LaBelle Breaks Career Assists Mark As Men's Basketball Tripped Up By Marywood

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Graduate student Chris LaBelle broke the school record for career assists in the Centenary University men's basketball team's 90-76 loss to Marywood University on Wednesday night in Atlantic East action.

LaBelle's helper on a senior Billy Veras' three-pointer at the 11:57 mark of the second half gave him 380 career assists as a Cyclone. LaBelle broke the previous mark of 379 held by Zachary Duymich (2013-17).

A jumper from Adam Boussatta at 16:05 helped Marywood open up a 7-4 lead to start the game.

Centenary used a 6-0 run to take a 10-7 edge with 15 minutes to go in the period.

Marywood grabbed a 15-10 lead on Matt McKenna's jumper at the 11:48 mark.

The two teams traded points over the next several minutes as sophomore Isaac Poueriet's lay-up at 7:09 gave the Cyclones a 20-17 advantage.

Leading 25-23, Centenary went on a 18-5 run over the final five minutes of the half and took a 43-28 lead at the break. Poueriet had seven points during that run while Veras poured in six points.

A pair of buckets from junior D'Angelo Blackmond helped the Cyclones take a 47-32 lead with 18:32 to go in the game.

Veras had a dunk at 17:19 to put the home team up 49-34.

Marywood responded with a 12-0 run and cut the Centenary advantage to three, 49-46 with 14:52 showing on the clock. Brendan Franko had seven points during that stretch.

After Marywood battled for a 55-53 lead at the 12:30 mark, the Cyclones responded with an 8-4 run and took back the lead 61-59. That run featured LaBelle breaking the career assists mark and was capped by a three-pointer from sophomore Shawn Falk.

A lay-up from Blackmond at 8:42 gave Centenary a 66-63 edge.

Marywood used a 14-3 run to take a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way. That scoring spurt gave the Pacers a 77-69 lead with 3:56 to go play.

The two teams continued to battle down the stretch as Marywood secured the 90-76 win.

Centenary shot 46.2% from the field and was 10-for-14 from the foul line. The Pacers shot 52.9% from the field and was aided by knocking down 10 three-pointers in the game. Marywood held a 40-31 edge in the rebounding battle.

Veras and Blackmond each tallied 20 points to lead the Cyclones in the contest. Veras added four rebounds, two assists and two steals while Blackmond had nine rebounds. Senior Harrison Lucibello added 10 points while Poueriet had 13 points. LaBelle finished with six points, eight assists and three rebounds.

Boussatta led Marywood with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Centenary wraps up the week when it travels to Immaculata for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 22.
