Thiessen Powers Field Hockey Over Wells, 7-2

AURORA, N.Y. - Michaela Thiessen had a career-high four goals and 10 points to lead the Centenary University field hockey team to a 7-2 win over Wells College on Saturday afternoon.

"I'm extremely proud of my Centenary field hockey athletes for their win at Wells today," said head coach Stephen Speirs. "It is a true testament to the work they have put in over the last couple of weeks. They are beginning to get and understand each other on the field. This is the formula for a competitive team and a successful season. There is more work to be done but I am confident that the team is up to the challenge."

Thiessen had a hand in both goals in the first quarter as the visitors took an early lead. She scored the first and then picked up the helper on Victoria Schirripa's tally.

Centenary added to its advantage with two more goals in the second quarter. Keirra Doyle and Thiessen found the back of the net which allowed Centenary to take a 4-0 lead at the break.

The Cyclones and Wells traded goals in the third quarter as Centenary took a 5-1 lead with 15 minutes to play.

Again, in the fourth quarter it was Thiessen playing a major role as she assisted on Schirripa's second of the day and scored.

Wells added a late goal as Centenary claimed the 7-2 victory.

Jenyfer Pereira started and made three saves to earn the win in goal. Emily Hotz made one save in relief action for the Cyclones. Samya Anderson-Victo made 12 saves for Wells.

Thiessen finished with four goals and two assists to lead the Centenary efforts. Schirripa had two goals and Toni Cacopardo made a defensive save.

Centenary is off until Saturday, Sept. 18 when it travels to Ramapo at 3:30 p.m.
