HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Junior
Carmen Escano posted her fourth double-double of the season but it was not enough as a strong second half lifted Clarks Summit University to a 73-61 win over the Centenary University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon.
Down 4-0 early, the Cyclones scored seven straight points and took a 7-4 advantage with 5:58 showing on the clock. Escano had four points during that stretch.
An
Elizabeth Singleton bucket for Clarks Summit briefly halted the run at 5:40.
Centenary scored 12 of the next 16 points which gave the home team a 19-9 lead with 2:06 showing on the clock. Sophomore
Salma Eddahiri connected for four points during that stretch.
Senior
Taylor Bossert connected on a late three-pointer as the Cyclones took a 22-13 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Escano connected on a pair of free throws to start the second quarter scoring as the Cyclones pushed its lead to 24-13.
Clarks Summit scored the next eight points in the game and cut the Centenary lead to three, 24-21 with 5:41 to go until the half.
The two teams traded points as a lay-up from senior
Victoria Jacobs gave the Cyclones a 28-23 lead with 3:17 to go in the period.
Bossert had a steal and a lay-up with 30 seconds left to put Centenary on top 32-27.
Clarks Summit answered with a late bucket but the Cyclones took a 32-29 lead at the break.
Back-to-back buckets from Eddahiri and Escano to start the third period gave Centenary a 36-31 edge with 8:52 showing on the clock.
Clarks Summit closed the third period on a 14-6 run and took a 45-42 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Randie Traxler had five points in that scoring spurt.
Clarks Summit opened the fourth quarter on an 11-4 run and pushed its lead to 56-46 with 7:50 to play.
The two teams battled down the stretch but Clarks Summit was able to maintain its double digit advantage and secured the 73-61 win.
Centenary shot 37.1% from the field and was 8-for-11 from the foul line. Clarks Summit shot 42.9% from the field and was 5-for-8 from the foul line. Centenary held a 44-40 edge in the rebounding battle.
Bossert led the Cyclones with 22 points, three assists and three steals. Escano finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double and fourth of the season. Eddahiri contributed eight points and seven rebounds.
Clarks Summit was led by Singleton who finished with a game-high 23 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals.
Centenary is back in action on Tuesday Nov. 30 when it travels to Cedar Crest at 7 p.m.
