SCRANTON, Pa. – Graduate student
Chris LaBelle made the game-tying bucket with 12 seconds left in regulation and then scored seven in overtime to lead the Centenary University men's basketball team to a 104-96 overtime win over Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Scranton Tournament.
The game was a back-and-forth affair that featured 24 ties and 28 lead changes.
"We played a well coached, very tough and physical Misericordia team," said head coach
Jason Geleski. "I'm proud of the way these young men battled all day. We have great leadership in our locker room and it shows on the floor."
Centenary raced out to an 8-0 lead in the first half as junior
D'Angelo Blackmond had five quick points.
Misericordia battled back to tie the game at 11-11 with 15:20 to go in the first half.
Centenary scored 11 of the next 15 points and took a 22-15 advantage with 12:28 showing on the clock. Centenary hit three three-pointers in that stretch including one from sophomore
Trevor Giordano.
The two teams traded baskets over the final 12 minutes of the period. Neither team took a lead of more than five points in that stretch. Misericordia took a 47-46 edge into the halftime break.
The start of the second half went much like the first 20 minutes of action with both teams fighting and clawing on each end of the court. Misericordia used a lay-up from
Kevin Lazdowsky at 13:28 to take a 66-55 lead, its largest of the game.
The two teams continued to go back and forth as a Blackmond lay-up at 6:09 tied the game at 76-76.
Misericordia led 89-85 with 30 seconds to play in regulation.
A lay-up from senior
Harrison Lucibello and a bucket from LaBelle tied the game up in the final 20 seconds and sent the two teams to an extra period.
Centenary dominated play in overtime as the Cyclones scored the first eight points of the extra session for a 97-89 advantage with 2:31 to go. Blackmond scored four points in that stretch.
The Cyclones went 7-for-8 from the foul line in the final two minutes of play to seal the 104-96 win.
Misericordia shot 42.9% from the field and was 17-for-20 from the foul line in the contest. Centenary shot 45.3% from the field and was 25-for-32 from the foul line. The Cyclones held a 47-43 edge in the rebounding battle.
For the second straight day, all five starters scored in double figures. Senior
Billy Veras led the way with 29 points and 11 rebounds while LaBelle added 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Senior
Tyler White had 19 points and seven assists while Blackmond had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Lucibello rounded out the group with 11 points.
Joseph Baldachino had 25 points for Misericordia.
Centenary is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 17 when it plays its home opener against Rutgers Newark at 7 p.m.
