LANCASTER, Pa. – Behind a season-high three goals from freshman
Jordan Vandermark, the Centenary University field hockey team won its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener at Lancaster Bible, 4-1 Friday night.
"The girls worked hard and managed to stay strong which was key in a game where we didn't have any subs (except the goalkeepers)," said head coach
Stephen Speirs.
Vandermark got the Cyclones on the board with a pair of tallies in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Her first goal came at 9:01 of the first period as she dribbled through the defense and scored. Just 20 seconds later Vandermark made it a 2-0 game, she stole a ball and used a back handed shot to score.
The Cyclones carried that 2-0 lead into the half as both teams had a chance but neither could find the back of the net in the remainder of the first period or the second.
Vandermark scored her third goal of the game at the 36:05 mark which pushed the Centenary lead to 3-0.
The Cyclones would strike one more time in the fourth quarter as Vandermark took the initial shot, which was tipped home by fellow freshman
Isabella Tracy.
Lancaster Bible got a late goal from
Nina Statuti, which made the final score 4-1.
Freshman
Sydnie Bogan earned the win in goal as she started the game and made one save in her first half of work. Fellow freshman
Emma Cahill made one save in second half relief action.
Chloe Campbell made three saves in the loss for Lancaster Bible.
Vandermark finished the game with three goals and one assist for seven points. It's the second most points in a single-game by a CSAC player this season.
The Cyclones are off until Saturday, Oct. 12 when they host Bryn Athyn at 11 a.m. It will be the second meeting of the season between the two schools as they met in a nonconference contest to open the season on August 31. Centenary won the first meeting, 5-1.
