HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – In a match that featured 11 ties, it was the City College of New York that emerged with a 3-0 victory over the Centenary University volleyball team on Tuesday night.
Senior
Storm Spooner led the Cyclones with four kills and five digs in the match.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle early as the two teams battled through nine ties. Spooner had a pair of kills and an assist as the Cyclones opened up an 11-7 lead. CCNY battled back and took a 14-13 lead but the Cyclones weren't done yet as an attack error by the Beavers gave the home team a 17-15 advantage. CCNY responded by scoring 10 of the final 11 points in the set for a 25-18 set win.
CCNY jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the second set but the Cyclones battled back and pulled to within two, 8-6 on a service ace from sophomore
Anabelle Olivo. The two teams continued to battle as a service ace from Spooner again pulled the Cyclones to within two, 13-11. The Beavers used a 7-0 run to take a 21-11 lead and eventually took the set, 25-14.
CCNY had three service aces and held off a late push by the Cyclones for a 25-18 win in set three.
In addition to Spooner's contributions, the Cyclones got 11 digs from senior
Brielle Gensinger. Olivo contributed three kills and four digs while sophomore
Amelia Rodriguez had eight assists.
Nicole Polanco had 11 kills and 12 digs for CCNY.
The Cyclones are back in action on Monday, Sept. 30 when they host King's College (N.Y.) at 7 p.m.
