HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Freshman
Lucienne Wolfson's goal in the seventh minute of play proved to be the difference as the Centenary University field hockey team battled for a 1-0 win over Sweet Briar College in the Cyclones' home opener on Saturday.
"It felt great to play at home, the girls had a lot of energy and a lot of excitement," said head coach
Stephen Speirs. "It's National Field Hockey Day and it was great to be here and get the excitement and support of the home crowd."
The Cyclones wasted little time in pushing the offensive tempo as freshman
Jordan Vandermark had a shot go high less than two minutes in.
Wolfson's tally came at the 6:56 mark as Vandermark crossed a ball to the near post and Wolfson knocked it home for her third goal of the season.
The Cyclones held a 1-0 advantage after 15 minutes of play.
Centenary forced Sweet Briar goalkeeper
Rosemary Austin to make three saves in the second quarter and carried its 1-0 lead into the half.
Both teams continued to battle in the second half but neither was able to find the back of the net and the Cyclones claimed the 1-0 victory.
Freshman
Sydnie Bogan started the game in goal for the Cyclones and was not forced to make a save to earn the win. Fellow freshmen
Emma Cahill and
Jenyfer Pereira each played one quarter in the second half and neither was forced to make a save. Austin finished with six saves for Sweet Briar.
Centenary had a 12-6 advantage in shots while each team took six penalty corners.
The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 18 when they travel to The Sage Colleges for a 7 p.m. game.
