Baseball Concludes Season With Losses to Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Centenary University baseball team fell in a pair of heartbreaking losses in its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader at Cairn University.

The Cyclones fell in game one by an 8-7 margin and saw their 2019 season come to an end with a 5-4 setback in game two.

Game One Recap (Cairn won 8-7)
Cairn jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.

Centenary answered right back as the Cyclones scored three runs in the top of the second. Freshman Keiji Ipposhi and sophomore Joe Saffioti each drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before junior Jon Fleck delivered an RBI double.

The Highlanders scored four runs in the bottom of the second and took a 6-3 lead in the contest. Alejandro Fernandez drove in a pair of runs with a single in that inning.

The Cyclones pulled to within one with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Freshman Paul Links reached via an error, which allowed junior Cole Fratesi to score. Ipposhi then singled to right field and Links scored which made it a 6-5 game.

Cairn pushed its lead to 8-5 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Freshman Christopher Gass singled home senior Chase Koffel in the sixth which made it an 8-6 game.

The Cyclones pulled to within one in the top of the seventh as Saffioti singled home Links. However Cairn was able to get the final two outs and secured the 8-7 win.

Albert Taylor earned the win on the hill for Cairn as he surrendered five runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Freshman Jared Miller took the loss as he gave up eight runs on four hits in the complete game performance.

Fernandez led Cairn with a hit, two RBIs and a run scored.

Fratesi had two hits and two runs scored for the Cyclones while Saffioti had two hits and two RBIs.

Game Two Recap (Cairn Won 5-4)
Cairn reached Centenary starter Casey Brown for three runs in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Fernandez and Brett Marks each had RBI singles in the frame.

The Highlanders tacked on another run in the bottom of the second for a 4-0 advantage.

The Cyclones finally broke through with a run in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Koffel lifted a sac fly to left and Ipposhi scored on the play.

Down to their final at-bats in the top of the seventh, the Cyclones sent seven batters to the plate and scored three runs to tie the game at 4-4. Junior Nick Scotto reached on a leadoff single and with two outs scored on Gass' RBI single. Senior Ryan Jasiecki doubled to right center to put runners on second and third. Fratesi ripped a single to left, which allowed both runners to score and tie the game.

Centenary got the first out in the bottom of the seventh before a walk and an RBI single gave Cairn the 5-4 win.

Matthew Meyers earned the win in relief for Cairn as he gave up three runs on four hits in one inning of work. Senior Frankie Iannone took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up one run on one hit in 0.2 innings.

Nate Wilson had two hits and two runs scored for Cairn.

Gass had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Cyclones while Fratesi had a hit and two RBIs.

The losses concluded the careers of Jasiecki, Koffel, Iannone, Brown, JT Valley, Stephen Fedak and Brenden Gerity. The Cyclones improved their win total from a year ago by eight wins and will return four of their top five batters and several of their top pitchers from a year ago.
