FLEMINGTON, N.J. – A gutsy 142-pitch complete game performance from senior
Casey Brown led the Centenary University baseball team to a 7-5 win over Wilson College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Monday afternoon.
The Centenary win coupled with a Cairn loss on Monday, means the Cyclones, Wilson and Cairn are all tied with 5-4 conference records. With two weekend series remaining, the trio are all still competing for one of the final two spots in the CSAC Tournament.
The Cyclones got the offensive going in the bottom of the second on Monday. Junior
Cole Fratesi led off with a single and came around to sophomore
Joe Saffioti's double down the right field line. Saffioti then crossed the plate as freshman
Paul Links ripped a double to right center. Links scored on an RBI single from freshman
Keiji Ipposhi and the Cyclones took a 3-0 advantage. Senior
Chase Koffel capped the scoring as he drove a ball over the fence in left field for his first career home run and a 5-0 advantage for the home team.
After Brown took care of business in the top of the third, the Cyclones added to their lead in the bottom half of the frame. Sophomore
Jonathan Pezzato drew a lead-off walk and moved to third on Saffioti's single. Links hit into a fielder's choice but the throw home trying to get Pezzato got past the catcher and the run scored making it a 6-0 game.
Wilson plated three runs in the fifth and cut the Centenary lead in half. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double from
Cole Rinehart to plate the first run.
The Cyclones pushed their lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior
Ryan Jasiecki lifted a sacrifice fly that allowed Koffel to cross the dish.
Brown set the Phoenix down in order in the top of the seventh and the top of the eighth.
Wilson was able to generate one last rally in the ninth as the first two runners reached and
Juan Rosario connected on a double that scored both runners and made it a 7-5 game.
The Cyclone defense stepped up in a big way as
Nick Quinn hit a ground ball to shortstop. Freshman
Christopher Gass threw a quick ball to first base to get an out. Jasiecki was able to fire the ball back across to third base for the double play. Wilson got one more base hit before Brown got a strikeout looking to end the game.
Brown picked up his second win of the year with the complete game performance. He allowed five runs, one of which was earned on six hits and struck out four.
Zach Sutherland took the loss for Wilson as he surrendered five runs on five hits 1.1 innings of work.
Saffioti was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Cyclones. Koffel and Links each had two hits for the home team. Koffel added two RBIs and two runs scored while Links had an RBI and a run scored.
Rinehart led Wilson with a two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
The Cyclones are back in action on Friday, April 26 when they host Clarks Summit at Morris Catholic High School. First pitch of that contest is set for 10:30 a.m.
