CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Centenary University baseball team battled back from a four-run deficit for a 10-8 win in game two and a doubleheader split at Wilson College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Saturday.
Game one saw the host Phoenix score 10 runs in the first three innings and earn the 16-2 win. The Cyclones battled back behind three hits and four RBIs from junior
Jon Fleck in game two for the 10-8 victory.
Game One Recap (Wilson Won 16-2)
Wilson jumped out to an early lead in game one with a run in the first inning and a pair of runs in the second.
The Phoenix used a seven run third inning to open up a 10-0 lead in the game. The big hit in that inning came from
Eric Holz, who hit a three-run home run.
Wilson pushed its lead to 11-0 with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cyclones broke through with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Fleck stroked a two-out double to right center and scored as freshman
Christopher Gass reached on an error.
Wilson scored four more times in the bottom of the fifth and grabbed a 15-1 lead in the contest.
Hunter Cheek had a two-run home run in the inning.
Centenary got one run back in the sixth as junior
Cole Fratesi led off the frame with a walk. The Cyclones loaded the bases and Fratesi scored as senior
Chase Koffel hit into a double play.
Wilson tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth and claimed the 16-2 win.
Kevin Ehrman earned the win on the mound for Wilson as he went five innings and allowed just one unearned run. Junior
Christopher Lilly took the loss for the Cyclones as he surrendered seven runs on 10 hits in 2.2 innings of action.
Holz was 4-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored to lead Wilson at the plate.
Senior
Ryan Jasiecki had a pair of base hits for the Cyclones.
Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 10-8)
The Cyclones found themselves down early in game two as Wilson scored three runs in the bottom of the first. The Phoenix scored their first run on a wild pitch before
Connor Martin had a two run single.
Centenary answered right back with three runs in the top of the second, which tied the game at 3-3. Koffel drew a bases loaded walk that scored sophomore
Joe Saffioti. Fleck then drove a single to left, which scored freshmen
Paul Links and
Keiji Ipposhi.
Wilson scored four runs in the top of the third and took a 7-3 lead in the contest. Martin hit a three-run home run and
Kevin Finn added an RBI double.
The Cyclones began their comeback in the fourth as Gass lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Ipposhi.
Centenary sent eight men to the plate in the fifth and scored four runs to turn a three-run deficit into an 8-7 lead. Koffel once again drove in Saffioti, this time with a single to right center. Fleck once again delivered a single to right that scored Links and Ipposhi. Gass capped the scoring with a sac fly that scored Koffel.
The Cyclones added two runs in the top of the seventh for a 10-7 lead. Fleck reached on an error that allowed Koffel and Ipposhi to score.
Wilson got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, which made it a 10-8 game but senior
JT Valley was able to get a pop up for the final out to secure the win.
Valley earned the win in relief as he tossed 4.1 strong innings of relief work and allowed just one run on one hit.
Trystan Housman took the loss for Wilson as he gave up four runs on three hits in just 0.1 innings of relief action.
Fleck had three hits and four RBIs for the Cyclones while Ipposhi had two hits and four RBIs. Koffel contributed a hit, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Martin led Wilson with two hits and five RBIs.
The Cyclones and Phoenix wrap up their season series on Monday, April 22 with a 3 p.m. game at Diamond Nation.
