HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Sophomore
Sydney D'Ortone and senior
Nicole Soriero each scored a pair of goals to lead the Centenary University women's lacrosse team in a hard fought 11-7 loss to Sweet Briar College on Saturday afternoon.
Soriero opened the day's scoring with her second goal of the year at 29:19.
Back-to-back tallies from
Kierstan Mullins gave Sweet Briar a 2-1 edge with 28:14 to go in the half.
Soriero's second of the day at 25:40 pulled the Cyclones even at 2-2.
Again the Vixens responded with back-to-back goals and took a 4-2 lead. This time the goals came from
Victoria Lawson with her second coming at 23:22.
Centenary continued to battle and scored two of the next three goals to pull to within one, 5-4 with 8:55 remaining in the half. Junior
Kaylee Bennett scored off a pass from freshman
Keirra Doyle before D'Ortone converted a free position opportunity.
Sweet Briar used a goal from
Hannah Marron at 5:50 to take a 6-4 lead at the half.
The two squads went back-and-forth to open the second half. Lawson sandwiched a pair of goals around tallies from Doyle and D'Ortone for the Cyclones. Sweet Briar held an 8-6 lead with 16:27 to play in the game.
Two straight goals pushed the Vixens' advantage to 10-6 with 15:30 to go in the game.
Senior
Jess Petty scored her first goal of the season on a free position shot which made it a 10-7 game with 2:08 to play.
Sweet Briar tacked on a goal in the final minute and claimed the 11-7 victory.
Sammy Holton made three saves to earn the win in goal for Sweet Briar. Senior
Renee Hack made 16 saves including 11 in the second half for the Cyclones.
Lawson led Sweet Briar with six goals, four draw controls, eight ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Soriero added six draw controls to go with her two goals for the Cyclones. D'Ortone had two goals, a draw control and a caused turnover while Doyle finished with a goal, an assist, five ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls. Junior
Cailin O'Hara scooped up six ground balls for the Cyclones.
Centenary will be back in action on Saturday, March 23 when the Cyclones open Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play by traveling to Notre Dame of Maryland for a 1 p.m. game.
