Women's Lacrosse Leads Early But Falls on the Road at Cedar Crest

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Centenary University women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead but a 6-0 run allowed Cedar Crest College to break open a close game and claim a 14-7 win in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener for both squads.

Senior Nicole Soriero and sophomore Sydney D'Ortone combined for five goals to lead the Cyclones.

After Cedar Crest scored the game's first goal, the Cyclones responded with back-to-back tallies and took a 2-1 lead with 28:43 to go in the first period. D'Ortone scored for the Cyclones before freshman Amanda Tietjen got her first career tally off an assist from junior Juliana Arias.

The two sides traded goals as Soriero's first of the day gave Centenary a 3-2 edge with 22:43 showing on the clock.

Cedar Crest scored the next six goals of the game and turned a one-goal deficit into a five-goal advantage, 8-3 with 13:15 left in the period. Sydney Heathcott scored three straight goals for the Falcons during that run.

Soriero struck for her second of the day at 5:54 to break up the Cedar Crest run. Junior Cailin O'Hara picked up the helper on the goal.

Cedar Crest scored one more goal before the half and took a 9-4 lead at the break.

The Falcons scored the first goal of the second half before the Cyclones scored three straight goals to pull to within three, 10-7. Soriero completed her hat trick before junior Kaylee Bennett struck for her second goal of the year. D'Ortone capped the scoring with her second of the day at 10:01.

Cedar Crest scored the final four goals of the day and claimed the 14-7 victory.

Allison Churchill made 21 saves to earn the win in goal for the Falcons. Senior Renee Hack finished with eight saves in the loss for the Cyclones.

Elysia Slattery led Cedar Crest with three goals and one assist for four points while also posting five ground balls and four draw controls. Heathcott added three goals and three draw controls.

Soriero finished with three goals, five ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Cyclones. D'Ortone contributed two goals and four draw controls while Bennett had a goal and three draw controls. O'Hara and freshman Madison Barofski led the defensive efforts with four ground balls and three caused turnovers each.

The Cyclones will be back in action when they host Keystone College on Saturday, March 30 at 3 p.m.
