HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Junior
Chris Howell set the school record for single-game ground balls with 22 as the Centenary University men's lacrosse team fell to the College of Mount Saint Vincent by a 9-5 margin on Wednesday afternoon.
Howell's 22 ground balls were one better than
Josh Caven's record of 21 set against Rosemont during the 2012 season.
Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with 7:34 to go in the first period.
Patrick Nagy scored both of the early goals for the Dolphins.
Sophomore
Kyle Mott got the Cyclones on the board with his seventh goal of the season at the 4:11 mark.
Matthew Pincus gave the Dolphins a 3-1 lead with his goal at 1:40.
Centenary tied things up at 3-3 with a pair of goals to open the second quarter. Sophomore
Nick Biango scored off a pass from freshman
Yousef Fahmi and Mott followed with his second of the day. That made it a tie game with 13:45 to go until the half.
Mount Saint Vincent used a 4-0 run to bridge the second and third quarters and took a 7-3 lead with 2:23 to go in the third. Nagy scored three of the four goals for the Dolphins during that stretch.
Back-to-back goals from sophomore
Timothy Kaiser III pulled the Cyclones to within two, 7-5 with 14:49 remaining in the fourth quarter. Junior
Noah Jones picked up the assist on Kaiser III's first goal in that stretch.
Mount Saint Vincent tacked on two more fourth quarter goals and claimed the 9-5 victory.
Christian Brody made 22 saves to earn the win in goal for the Dolphins. Sophomore
Ryan Lacamera posted seven saves in the loss for the Cyclones.
Nagy led Mount Saint Vincent with five goals and four ground balls while
Jaiden Martinez had seven ground balls, two caused turnovers and an assist.
Mott and Kaiser III each tallied two goals for the Cyclones. In addition to his 22 ground balls, Howell won 16 of the 17 faceoffs he took.
Saturday's Centenary/Maritime game has been cancelled. The Cyclones will now be back in action on Saturday, March 23 when they open Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play by travelling to Rosemont for a 1 p.m. game.
