PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Facing a tough challenge in the season opener, the Centenary University wrestling team battled hard in all three matches of the Rutgers Quad Meet on Saturday.
Centenary took on Pitt-Johnstown, who was ranked #1 in the Division II Preseason Poll, Rutgers who is a member of the Big Ten and LIU, which just made the jump from Division II to Division I. The Cyclones faced five wrestlers, who have previous experience as a NCAA National Qualifier in the past.
Sophomore
Stanley Wojdylak provided the Cyclones with a win at 157-pounds against Pitt-Johnsontown. He posted a 6-2 decision over
Jacob Smith. Centenary took on four wrestlers in that match with previous National Qualifier experience. Sophomore
Justin Hopman was just edged in a 3-1 decision at 197-pounds while freshman
Ryan Anderson also fell by decision at 149-pounds. Pitt-Johnsontown earned a 44-3 win over the Cyclones.
Facing a talented Rutgers squad, junior
Dylan Luciano earned a win by fall in 4:10 over
Malcolm Robinson at 125-pounds. Anderson was just edged by
Gerard Angelo at 149-pounds, 4-3. The Scarlet Knights claimed a 38-6 win over the Cyclones.
The Cyclones got wins at 149 and 165 pounds against LIU. Anderson picked up his first collegiate win by forfeit at 149-pounds while senior
Jeremy Nurnberger posted a 9-5 decision against
Nicholas Provenzano at 165-pounds. Sophomore
Cameron Bruffy (141-pounds) was just edged by
Anthony Dushai at 141-pounds, 5-4 while Wojdylak dropped a hard fought 3-0 decision to
Rhine Royster at 157-pounds.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 10 when they take part in the East Stroudsburg Open starting at 9 a.m.
