HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Freshman
Michaela Thiessen's goal 6:31 into the overtime session lifted the Centenary University field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
Prior to the start of the game, the Cyclones recognized seniors
Dayna Wich and
Elizabeth Karpinski.
After a scoreless first period in which the two teams combined for 11 shots, the Cyclones got on the board in the second period. Freshman
Megan Baker scored off a pass from fellow freshman
Isabella Tracy at 26:08.
The Cyclones carried that 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
The Gators tied the game at 1-1 on a
Vanessa Dunn goal at 38:39.
Centenary went back on top, 2-1 at sophomore
Keirra Doyle scored off a penalty corner just 12 seconds later. Doyle's first goal of the season came off a pass that was inserted by Baker.
Dunn once again struck for the equalizer for Notre Dame. Her second goal of the day came off a pass from
Makeima Elise Freeland at 42:58.
Both teams battled hard on each end of the field in the fourth quarter but neither was able to find the back-of-the-net and the two teams headed to overtime.
The Cyclones had to start the seven on seven extra session, one player down as they received a green card as time expired in regulation. However, the home team was able to kill off the card.
Centenary got the game-winner at 66:31 as Thiessen scored off a pass from freshman
