HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Five players scored at least two goals as the Centenary University field hockey team rolled to a 12-1 win over Wells College on Sunday afternoon.
Prior to the start of the game, the Cyclones recognized three Centenary alumnae who played field hockey on the club level.
Wendy Hope Coggins ('68),
Carol Valentine Allen ('72) and
Ellen McCracken ('74) all played field hockey during their time at Centenary.
"It was awesome to see some of the alumnae back today and I hope meeting them inspired the girls," said head coach
Stephen Speirs. "I thought we did a nice job of getting the offense clicking today with multiple forwards, including senior
Elizabeth Karpinski (first two goals of the season). We're going to need those contributions on Wednesday against a tough Keystone squad."
The Cyclones struck twice in the first 15 minutes of the game and freshman
Michaela Thiessen had a hand in both goals. Thiessen had the assist as freshman
Isabella Tracy scored the game's first goal. She then scored a goal off a rebound at 8:54.
Centenary exploded for six goals in the second period and took an 8-0 lead in the game. Freshmen
Lucienne Wolfson and
Jordan Vandermark each scored twice in that 15-minute stretch for the Cyclones. Karpinski struck for her first career goal in that stanza as well.
The Cyclones pushed their lead to 9-0 early in the third quarter as Thiessen scored off a pass from senior
Dayna Wich.
Wells got one on the board as Whitney Coleman scored at the 41:51 mark.
Centenary tacked on three more goals in the fourth quarter for the 12-1 win. Wolfson had a goal and an assist while Thiessen had a pair of helpers. Karpinski also scored her second of the day during that stretch.
Freshman
Sydnie Bogan started the game for the Cyclones and did not make a save in the first quarter. Fellow freshman
Emma Cahill made one save in the second quarter while freshman
Jenyfer Pereira made three saves in the second half.
Sabrina Burns made 15 saves in the loss for Wells.
Wolfson and Tracy finished with three goals and one assist each for the Cyclones while Thiessen contributed two goals and four assists. Vandermark had two goals and an assist while Karpinski finished with the two goals.
The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 16 when they host Keystone at 4 p.m. It will be a battle of two of the top teams in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play as both teams enter that game with 2-0 conference records.
