BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Four starters scored in double figures as the Centenary University men's basketball team exploded for a season-high 95 points in a 95-69 win over Bryn Athyn on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
The 95 points were the most scored by a Cyclone squad since the 2016-17 season. Centenary also connected on a season-best 15 three-pointers in the game.
Trailing 8-5 early in the game, Centenary went on a 9-0 run and took a 14-8 lead with 15:42 to go in the half. Senior
Tom Weiler sunk a pair of three-pointers during that stretch while sophomore
Chris LaBelle also connected on a triple.
The two teams continued to battle as back-to-back triples from Weiler pushed the Cyclone advantage to 26-14 with 9:59 showing on the clock.
Weiler's fifth three-pointer of the half gave the visitors a 35-17 lead with 6:59 to go in the period.
That triple was part of a 16-0 run that gave Centenary a 44-17 advantage with 4:15 to go in the half. Sophomore
Emmanuel Doh had five points during that run while LaBelle and freshman
Billy Veras each had four points.
The two teams traded points over the final four minutes of the period. Sophomore
Michael Young's three-pointer at 36 seconds sent the Cyclones into the half with a 53-27 advantage.
The Cyclones and Lions battled on each end of the court early in the second half. LaBelle's three-pointer at 16:23 pushed the Centenary lead to 61-31.
The two teams continued to battle as a three-pointer from Young gave the Cyclones a 71-43 advantage with 12:56 to go in the game.
A 9-0 run put the visiting team ahead 81-50 with 7:42 showing the clock. That run was capped by a jumper from Veras, which gave the Cyclones their largest lead of the game.
A three-pointer from senior
Stewart Lester gave Centenary an 86-61 lead with 4:18 to go in the game.
The Cyclones eventually claimed the 95-69 win.
Centenary shot 47.7 percent from the field in the game with the 15 made three-pointers. The Cyclones also went 18-for-26 from the foul line. Bryn Athyn posted a 30.8 field goal percentage for the game and made nine three-pointers. The Lions were 12-for-15 from the charity stripe. Centenary won the rebounding battle, 51-47.
LaBelle poured in a career-high 29 points while adding seven assists, four rebounds and two steals. Weiler finished with a career-best 19 points and eight rebounds. Both players knocked down five three-pointers in the contest to lead the Centenary efforts from behind the arc.
Doh recorded his second straight double-double performance and fifth of the season. He posted 18 points and 14 rebounds while Veras had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Cyclones.
Rahim Washington led Bryn Athyn with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Cyclones are back in action on Friday, Jan. 18 as they travel to Keystone for an 8 p.m. game. That game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved because of the chance of winter weather over the weekend.
