Hernandez Scores for Men's Soccer in Battle at USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – A goal in the final two minutes of regulation lifted the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to a 2-1 win over the Centenary University men's soccer team on Wednesday night.

The Cyclones got the scoring started in the contest as senior Sebastian Hernandez scored his first goal of the season and second of his career. Hernandez's goal came at the 15:36 mark of the first half and was assisted by freshman Sebastian Montoya.

Centenary carried that 1-0 lead into the intermission as senior Devon Warne made four stops in the first 45 minutes of play.

Warne was tested early in the second period and came up with two saves in the early going to keep the visitors in the lead.

The Mariners broke through and tied the game at 1-1 on a goal from Michael Mischler at 64:56.

Warne and the Cyclone defense thwarted several attempts by the Mariners over the next 10 minutes. The home team took six shots in that stretch and all were either blocked by the defense or saved by Warne.

Both teams had chances down the stretch but neither was able to find the back of the net until the Mariners scored what proved to be the game-winner at 88:17. Zach Lysakowski took the ball down the left side, kicked up over the goalie and then headed home his own ball.

Senior Jared Miele got one final shot off for the Cyclones but it went wide and the Mariners claimed the win.

Matthew Milner made two saves to earn the win in goal for the Mariners. Warne finished with a season-high 10 saves in the contest for the Cyclones, six of which came in the second half.

The Cyclones are off until Wednesday, Sept. 19 when they travel to FDU Florham for a 7 p.m. game.
