New England College Takes Doubleheader from the Cyclones

FLEMINGTON, N.J. – A hot hitting New England College baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Centenary University baseball team on Thursday afternoon at Diamond Nation in Flemington, New Jersey. The Pilgrims earned a 15-3 win in game one and earned the sweep with an 11-2 victory in the nightcap.

Game one recap
The Pilgrims (6-3) jumped out to an early lead as they got a lead-off home run from Christian Aybar.

The Cyclones responded in the bottom half of the frame as senior John Tierney reached on a single and moved to third on a double off the bat of senior Tim Maxwell. With two outs, Tierney scored on a wild pitch by New England.

The Pilgrims took the lead back with single runs in the top of the second and third innings before tacking on five runs in the top of the fourth for an 8-1 advantage. New England got a home run from Jeam Castillo and Evan Delaney added a two-run triple to highlight that action.

New England added six more runs between the sixth and seventh innings and led 14-1 in the game. Castillo hit his second home run of the game, during that run, this time a three-run shot.

The Cyclones plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The first three Centenary players reached in the frame. With one out, senior Mike Dolan reached on a fielder's choice which scored senior Kevin Sensale and junior Chase Koffel.

The Pilgrims scored one more time in the ninth which made the final score 15-3.

Shayne Audet earned the win on the mound for New England after giving up just one run on two hits in six innings of work. Junior Stephen Fedak took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up eight runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings of work.

Delaney led the Pilgrims after going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Castillo went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs.

Tierney had two hits and a run scored out of the lead-off spot for the Cyclones. Koffel contributed a hit and a run scored.

Game two recap
New England grabbed an early advantage in game two as the Pilgrims scored five runs between the first and second innings. Luis Atiles had a two-run home runs for the Pilgrims during that stretch.

A sacrifice fly and a run scoring single pushed the Pilgrims' advantage to 7-0 in the top of the fourth inning.

The Cyclones plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Maxwell reached on an error and moved to second as sophomore Jon Fleck was hit by a pitch. Junior Ryan Jasiecki then reached via an error by the right fielder as Maxwell and Fleck scored.

A grand slam from Aybar in the eighth inning made the final score 11-2 in favor of the Pilgrims.

Nick Powers turned in a complete game performance to earn the win for the Pilgrims. He gave up two runs on five hits. Casey Brown took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up seven runs in four innings.

Aybar had three hits, three runs scored and four RBIs to lead New England in game two.

Fleck had a hit and a run scored for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones and Pilgrims will wrap up their three game series with a  single game on Friday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
