HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Four of the five starters scored in double figures to lead the Centenary University men's basketball team to a 75-57 win over The City College of New York on Saturday afternoon in the CUNY/CSAC Challenge.
The Cyclones, who won back-to-back games for the first time this season, got a pair of 20+ point performances from freshmen
Chris LaBelle and
Larry Joseph.
Sophomore
Greg Robinson hit a jumper at 15:55 which gave the Cyclones a 10-5 advantage. A lay-up from freshman
Jalen Horsley pushed the Centenary lead to 19-11 with 11:03 to go in the half. The Beavers used an 11-5 run to pull to within two, 24-22 with 6:02 showing on the clock.
Salvatore Palazzolo scored five points during that stretch for CCNY.
Centenary responded by scoring eight of the next 12 points and took a 32-26 lead with 3:45 to go in the period. LaBelle and freshman
Michael Young each knocked down a three-pointer during that run. The Beavers used an 8-4 run to pull to within two, 36-34 with 1:41 left on the clock. Palazzolo was responsible for five of the eight points.
The Cyclones closed the first half on a 5-0 run and took a 41-34 lead at the half.
Centenary's first three baskets of the second half came via the three-pointer. LaBelle's second triple of the half gave the home team a 52-38 lead with 11:26 to go in the game.
The Beavers used a 12-4 run to cut the Centenary lead to six, 56-50 with 7:28 left in the period.
Dardan Lahu scored seven for CCNY during that stretch.
Nine straight points by the Cyclones pushed the home team's lead back to 15, 65-50 with 4:31 to play. Joseph accounted for four of the Cyclones' points, two of which came on a monster dunk.
A three-pointer from
James White pulled CCNY to within 12, 67-55 with 3:28 left on the clock. Centenary closed the game on an 8-2 run and secured the 75-57 victory.
Centenary shot 51.8 percent from the field, it was the third time this season the Cyclones have shot 50 percent or better from the field. Centenary connected on seven three-pointers and was 10-for-13 from the foul line. The Beavers posted a 38.3 field goal percentage. The Cyclones held a 41-25 advantage in the rebounding battle.
Joseph led Centenary with a season-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. It was his fifth double-double of the season and second game with 20 or more points scored. LaBelle contributed 20 points, his third straight game with 20 or more points and eighth game this season. Young posted 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Senior
Hamp Smith was the fourth Cyclone in double figures as he had 11 points, six assists and four steals.
Lahu led CCNY with 16 points.
The Cyclones are back in action as they head to Marywood on Wednesday, Feb. 7 for an 8 p.m. game.
