SCRANTON, Pa. – The Centenary men's basketball team outscored Marywood University 38-32 in the second half but was unable to complete the comeback as the Pacers claimed the 66-58 win in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. Freshman
Chris LaBelle scored 16 of his team-high 20 points to lead the Cyclones.
Marywood got off to a strong start and took a 13-3 lead on a jumper from
Thomas Swartz at 13:55. Another bucket from Swartz pushed the Pacers' advantage to 16-7 with 10:43 showing on the clock.
A 5-2 run pulled the Cyclones to within six, 18-12 with 8:11 left in the period. Freshman
Jalen Horsley was responsible for all five of those points. Marywood pushed its lead back to 10, 22-12 with 6:36 until the half.
Centenary used an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to four, 24-20 with 3:50 left in the period. LaBelle and fellow freshman
Larry Joseph each tallied four points during that stretch. Marywood scored the final 10 points of the first half and took a 34-20 lead at the break.
The Cyclones opened the second half on an 8-0 run and cut the Marywood lead to six, 34-28 with 17:32 to play. LaBelle struck for all eight of the Cyclones' points during that stretch.
Marywood scored the next 14 points and took a 48-28 lead with 13:17 to go in the game. Swartz and
James Curley each had six points during that run.
A pair of free throws from Joseph pulled Centenary to within 10, 50-40 with 7:45 left on the clock. The two teams continued to battle on both ends of the court. A three-pointer from LaBelle made it a 58-51 game with 3:33 remaining in the period.
Another triple from LaBelle pulled the Cyclones to within six, 64-58 with 50 seconds left. However, that was as close as Centenary could get as Marywood claimed the 66-58 win.
 Marywood shot 45.3 percent from the field and connected on five three-pointers. The Pacers hit 13-of-17 chances from the foul line. Centenary posted a 32.2 field goal percentage and also made five triples. The Cyclones were 15-for-25 from the foul line.
LaBelle has now scored 20 or more points in four straight games for Centenary. Joseph posted his second straight double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Swartz led Marywood with 22 points.
The Cyclones return home to host Neumann on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. Centenary will honor senior
Hamp Smith before the game.
