THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – SUNY Maritime scored the final six goals of the game to secure a 9-5 win over the Centenary University men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both squads. Senior
Nolan Gottshall led the Cyclones with three goals and an assist.
With the scored tied at 1-1 in the first quarter, the Cyclones got back-to-back goals from freshman
Kyle Mott and junior
Chris Snow. That gave the visitors a 3-1 lead at the end of one period of play.
Gottshall needed just 37 seconds to find the back of the net in the second quarter. The senior's second goal of the game extended the Centenary advantage to 3-1.
Maritime scored the final two goals of the second quarter as Centenary took a 4-3 lead at the half.
Danny Connell had a goal and an assist for the Privateers during that stretch.
Gottshall gave the Cyclones a two-goal advantage at 12:48 of the third quarter with his third score of the game. Gottshall's goal came while the Cyclones were in a man-up situation.
A pair of third period goals from
Matt DeMeo allowed Maritime to tie the game at 5-5. Both of DeMeo's goals were assisted by
Brett Trodden.
Maritime continued its scoring run with four more goals in the fourth quarter and claimed the 9-5 victory.
Collin Flannery had a pair of goals during that stretch for the Privateers.
Brendan McNally made 14 saves to earn the win in goal for the Privateers. Freshman
Wayne Safreed made 10 saves in his collegiate debut for the Cyclones.
Centenary held a 30-25 edge in shots in the game and recorded 37 ground balls to Maritime's 23.
Gottshall led the Cyclones with his four points while Snow finished with two points on a goal and an assist.
Sophomore
Chris Howell had a big day for the Cyclones as he won 17-of-18 faceoffs and collected 18 ground balls. Howell's performance at the faceoff "X" ranks fifth in single-game history at Centenary while his 18 ground balls are tied for third in single-game history.
Nick Pellegrino and Trodden led Maritime with three points apiece. The pair each recorded a goal and two assists.
The Cyclones get back to action on Wednesday, Feb. 28 when they travel to Alvernia for a 4 p.m. game.
