SCRANTON, Pa. – Senior
Rachel Edwards scored the 1,000
th point of her career and finished with a double-double but it was not enough as No. 5 Centenary University fell to No. 4 Marywood University, 81-69 in the first round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs.
Edwards hit her milestone basket with 1:46 to go in the first period. She is the ninth player in program history to go over the 1,000 career points mark.
Centenary jumped out to a 6-2 lead as freshman
Danika Brandt connected on a jumper at 7:21. The Cyclones pushed their lead to 10-6 on a jumper from senior
Julia Presant at 3:09. Five straight points gave Marywood an 11-10 lead with 2:09 to go in the period.
Edwards hit her milestone basket at 1:46 and put the visitors back on top, 12-11.
Marywood scored four of the final six points in the period and took a 15-14 lead after one period of play.
The Cyclones scored 12 of the first 14 points in the second quarter and took a 26-17 lead with 5:16 to go until the half. Six Cyclones scored two points during that stretch. A pair of free throws from Edwards pushed the visitors' advantage to 28-20 with 3:05 to go in the period.
Marywood closed the second quarter on a 13-2 run and took a 33-30 lead at the half.
A three-pointer from
Erika Bistran gave Marywood a 38-34 lead with 8:55 to go in the third quarter. A jumper from freshman
Julie Pankowski pulled the Cyclones to within two, 40-38 with 7:57 showing on the clock.
A triple from
Gab Giordano gave the home team a 49-42 lead with 5:13 left in the stanza. A traditional three-point play from senior
Nicole Cartaino pulled the Cyclones to within eight, 53-45 with 2:33 left on the clock.
The two teams battled down the stretch as Marywood took a 62-51 lead with 10 minutes to play.
The Cyclones and Pacers traded baskets over the first several minutes of the fourth quarter. A lay-up from Cartaino pulled the visitors to within eight, 74-66 with 2:05 to play. That was as close as the Cyclones would get as Marywood claimed the 81-69 win.
Marywood shot 40.9 percent from the field and was 17-for-29 in the second half. The Pacers hit nine three-pointers and was 18-for-26 from the charity stripe. Centenary posted a 42.0 field goal percentage and was 10-for-15 from the foul line. Marywood held a 46-40 edge in the rebounding battle.
In her final game as a Cyclone, Cartaino finished with a game-high 25 points and six rebounds. Edwards contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds while Presant also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. It is the seventh time in program history that a player has recorded 10 or more assists in a game.
Amber Reisenwitz had 13 points to become the fourth Cyclone to score in double-figures.
Giordano finished with 19 points to lead Marywood.
Head coach
Rose Haller loses Cartaino, Edwards, Presant and Reisenwitz put will return several players next season including the freshmen duo of Pankowski and Brandt.
