Box Score HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The senior duo of
Nicole Cartaino and
Rachel Edwards combined for 35 points and 23 rebounds to lead the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 62-51 win over Notre Dame of Maryland on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. The Cyclones recognized their four seniors before the start of their final home game.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair as the two teams traded baskets on each end of the floor. A 7-2 run gave the Cyclones a 13-7 lead with 1:33 to go in the period. Freshman
Julie Pankowski had three points for Centenary during that run.
Zaria Comer scored the final six points on the stanza for Notre Dame and the two sides were tied at 13-13 after one.
With Notre Dame leading by one in the second quarter, the Cyclones used a 14-0 run to take a 29-16 lead with 1:40 to go until the half. Senior
Amber Reisenwitz scored four points during that key scoring stretch while Cartaino added three points. Comer converted a traditional three-point play to close out the second quarter scoring but the Cyclones took a 29-19 lead at the half.
Centenary scored five of the first seven points in the third quarter and took a 34-21 lead with 6:38 to go in the period. Edwards drained a triple during that stretch for the Cyclones. The two teams traded points as Reisenwitz's lay-up at 2:16 put the Cyclones up 39-27. The two teams traded foul shots over the final two minutes of the period and the Cyclones took a 48-39 lead with 10 minutes to play.
The Cyclones opened the fourth quarter on a 9-4 run and took a 57-43 lead with 6:41 to play. Reisenwitz was responsible for six of the nine points during that scoring stretch. Notre Dame responded by scoring the next six points and cut the Centenary lead to 57-49 with 4:57 showing on the clock. Five straight points from Cartaino pushed the Cyclones' lead back to 13, 62-49 with 4:03 to play. Notre Dame scored the final two points of the game as the Cyclones claimed a 62-51 win.
Centenary shot 37.7 percent from the field and connected on 13-of-17 chances from the foul line. Notre Dame posted a 29.0 field goal percentage and was 11-for-17 from the charity stripe. The Cyclones held a 45-43 edge in the rebounding battle.
Cartaino finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds and three steals to lead the Cyclones. It was the senior's fifth game this season with 20 or more points and fifth double-double of the season. Edwards contributed 15 points , 10 rebounds and three steals. It was her sixth double-double of the season. Reisenwitz contributed 16 points and six rebounds while fellow senior
Julia Presant had four points and seven assists.
Justine Mudiay and Comer had 11 points each for Notre Dame.
The Cyclones are back in action as they travel to Keystone on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m.
