Men's Basketball Runs Win Streak to Three With Victory at Medgar Evers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – A balanced scoring attack led the Centenary University men's basketball team to an 88-71 win over Medgar Evers College on Sunday afternoon in the closing contest of the Medgar Evers Tournament.

Sophomores Chris LaBelle and Emmanuel Doh posted double-double performances to lead the Cyclones to their third straight win.

A triple from LaBelle at the 15:28 mark helped the Cyclones open up a 9-2 early lead. Medgar Evers scored the next nine points in the game and took an 11-9 edge with 13:38 showing on the clock.

The two teams traded baskets on both end of the court as Doh's lay-up at 6:37 put the Cyclones ahead 23-21.

Centenary scored four of the final six points in the half and took a 32-28 advantage at the break.

The start of the second half saw both squads battling on each end of the court. Doh converted a traditional three-point play at 18:21 which gave the Cyclones a 39-32 lead.

A lay-up from freshman Tyler White at 15:12 pushed the Centenary lead to 46-38.

Centenary used an 18-2 run to push its advantage to 64-43 with 10:21 to go in the game. Sophomore Michael Young got hot during that stretch as he hit for 11 points during that scoring stretch, including three three-pointers.

Back-to-back buckets from junior Pablo Vasquez and Young gave the visitors a 70-49 lead with 7:45 to go in the game.

A fast break lay-up from LaBelle at 6:41 pushed the Centenary advantage to 74-51.

Medgar Evers scored 11 straight points which made it a 74-62 game with 5:16 to go in the game.

Centenary scored 14 of the final 23 points in the game and secured the 88-71 win.

The Cyclones shot 40.8 percent from the field and made eight three-pointers in the game. Centenary was 18-for-28 from the free throw line in the contest. Medgar Evers posted a 38.4 field goal percentage and hit nine triples. Medgar Evers was just 6-for-12 from the foul line in the game. Centenary pulled down a season-high 60 rebounds and outrebounded the Cougars by 20, 60-40.

LaBelle led the Cyclones with 20 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. It was LaBelle's fourth straight game scoring 20 or more points and added four assists. Doh contributed 13 points and 14 rebounds for his second straight double-double.

Young came off the bench to drop in 17 points for the Cyclones while White finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Nine of the 11 Cyclones who appeared in the game scored at least two points in the game.

Joancarlo Bonilla came off the bench to lead Medgar Evers with 13 points.

The Cyclones play their third game in three days as they travel to UMBC on Monday, Dec. 31 for an exhibition game at 1 p.m.
