Emmanuel Doh had a steal and a lay-up and freshman
Billy Veras came up with a block on a shot at the buzzer to give the Centenary University men's basketball team a thrilling 75-74 comeback win over Delaware Valley University on Friday afternoon.
The Cyclones, who trailed by as many as 10 in the game, rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final 2:38 to grab the win. Doh scored the final five points of the game for the Cyclones and finished with 12.
Centenary controlled the opening tip of the game and quickly jumped out to a 15-7 lead as junior
Pablo Vasquez connected on a three-pointer at 12:54.
The two teams traded baskets as sophomore
Michael Young's triple at 9:08 gave the home team a 25-15 advantage.
A lay-up from Doh at 7:16 pushed the Centenary advantage to 27-17.
Delaware Valley responded by scoring 23 of the final 28 points in the half and took a 40-32 lead at the half.
Lybrant Robinson paced the Aggies with nine points in that run while
Andre' Butler had six.
A lay-up from Butler at 18:43 of the second half gave Delaware Valley its largest lead of the game, 42-32.
Centenary used a 14-2 run to take a 46-44 advantage with 13:39 to go in the game. Freshman
Divine Anderson and Veras each contributed five points during that run.
Delaware Valley responded by scoring 14 of the next 21 points in the game and took a 58-53 lead with 8:34 showing on the clock. Robinson posted six of the 14 points during that stretch.
The two teams traded points as a lay-up from LaBelle at 5:52 pulled the Cyclones to within two, 60-58.
The Aggies used a 10-5 run to push their lead to seven, 70-63 with 2:38 to play.
Centenary scored seven of the next eight points and pulled to within two, 72-70 with just 36 seconds to go in the contest. LaBelle dropped in four while freshman
Tyler White had a big three-pointer.
A pair of free throws from
Damani Myers with 28 seconds to play pushed the Delaware Valley lead to four, 74-70.
Doh connected on a big triple with 18 seconds to go and on the ensuing play forced a turnover at midcourt. Doh hit the lay-up with eight seconds left to give the Cyclones a 75-74 edge.
Following the timeout, Robinson went for a lay-up as time expired but Veras swatted away the shot to secure the win for the Cyclones.
Centenary shot 43.1 percent from the field in the game and for the fifth time this season connected on at least 10 shots from three-point range. The Cyclones also shot 64.3 percent from the foul line in the game. Delaware Valley posted a 52.8 field goal percentage and made nine triples. The Aggies were 9-for-10 from the charity stripe in the game. Centenary held a 34-31 edge in the rebounding battle.
LaBelle led a group of four Cyclones, who scored in double figures in the game. The sophomore had a game-high 23 points, his second straight 20+ point performance. He also added five assists and three rebounds. Veras had his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while adding two blocks.
Doh finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for the Cyclones while Anderson added 10 points.
Robinson paced Delaware Valley with 20 points and seven rebounds.
The Cyclones are off until Saturday, Dec. 29 when they face the College of New Rochelle at the Medgar Evers Classic.
