PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Seniors Christopher Muce and Etiini Udott and junior Jeremy Nurnberger each picked up a pair of wins to lead the Centenary University wrestling team at the season-opening Rutgers University Quad Meet on Saturday.

The Cyclones faced a tough task in their opening match as they took on No. 13 Rutgers, who is a Division I opponent and a member of the Big Ten. Centenary battled hard but eventually fell 48-3 to the Scarlet Knights.

The Cyclones won four weight classes against Division III's third ranked Johnson & Wales but ultimately were tripped up 27-16.

Centenary rounded out the day by falling to Fresno State by a 33-9 score.

All of the matches were started at 165 pounds on the day.

Muce highlighted the Centenary performance against Rutgers as he picked up an 8-2 decision over Jake Benner at 157 pounds.

Freshman Haakon Mathewson (165), senior Jordan Juliano (174) and freshman Cameron Bruffy (141) all battled their opponents hard as all three of the matches went 4:30 or longer. Junior Bobby Demeter (133) and freshman Logan Long (149) both faced Scarlet Knights that were ranked second in their respective weight classes and battled hard.

The Cyclones picked up four wins against Johnson & Wales. Nurnberger posted a 7-2 decision at 165 pounds to start the match. Juliano followed that up with a 17-6 major decision at 174 pounds. Udott posted a 6-5 win at 197 pounds. Muce earned his second win of the day as his opponent at 157 was disqualified with Muce leading 9-4.

Nurnberger got the Cyclones off to a good start against Fresno State with a win at 165 pounds. His victory was the result of an injury decision. Udott got a second overtime period victory at 197 pounds.

The Cyclones are back in action when they travel to the East Stroudsburg Open on Saturday, Nov. 10. The action gets underway at 9 a.m.
