HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Drew University took the lead after one quarter and claimed a 64-27 win over the Centenary University women's basketball team on Thursday night.
Junior
Katie Alvarez led the Cyclones with 11 points and eight rebounds in a game that was originally scheduled to be played at Drew but was moved to Hackettstown due to facility issues at Drew.
The two teams went back-and-forth early as jumpers from freshman
Victoria Jacobs and sophomore
Danika Brandt gave the Cyclones an 8-6 lead with 4:50 to go in the first.
Drew closed the period on a 7-2 run and took a 15-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Seyka Campbell led the Rangers with three points in that stretch.
Drew scored the first 10 points of the second quarter and jumped out to a 34-16 lead at the half. Campbell tallied nine points for the Rangers in that period.
A three-pointer from
Hailey Stine opened the third quarter scoring as Drew pushed its lead to 37-16. The Rangers were able to maintain an advantage of 20 points or better the rest of the way and claimed the 64-27 victory.
Drew shot 39.7 percent from the field in the game and went 13-for-19 from the foul line. Centenary posted a 25.6 field goal percentage and hit 7-of-10 chances from the charity stripe. The Rangers held a 35-32 edge in the rebounding battle.
Alvarez hit 4-of-7 shots to lead the Cyclones while Jacobs chipped in six points. Freshman
Jessica McKenzie pulled down seven rebounds for Centenary.
Campbell led Drew with 18 points and six steals.
The Cyclones are back in action when they host Cairn on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. to open Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
