HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – In a back-and-forth battle, Brooklyn College used a late run to edge the Centenary University men's basketball team by an 80-76 margin on Tuesday night in J.E. Reeves Student Recreation Center.
The contest featured nine ties and 15 lead changes between the Cyclones and Bulldogs.
A three-pointer from sophomore
Lewis Hargett gave the Cyclones an 11-7 lead with 14:39 to play in the first half. Brooklyn took a brief lead before a triple from sophomore
Michael Young gave Centenary a 14-12 advantage with 13:04 left on the clock.
The two teams traded points before a lay-up from sophomore
Larry Joseph tied the game at 22-22 with 8:36 remaining in the period. A 13-4 run gave the visitors a 35-26 lead with 2:44 to go in the stanza.
Jordan Wright hit a pair of three-pointers for the Bulldogs during that stretch.
Centenary scored eight of the final 10 points in the period and cut the Brooklyn lead to 37-34 at the half.
The Cyclones opened the second stanza on an 11-6 run and tied the game at 45-45 with 15 minutes to play. Young connected on a pair of triples during that scoring stretch.
A quick 6-0 run pushed the Brooklyn advantage to 51-45 with 13:59 left in the game.
Centenary took a 57-55 lead with 10:23 showing on the clock after a three-pointer from freshman
Harrison Lucibello.
Trailing 59-58, Brooklyn used an 8-2 run to take a 68-61 lead in the contest with 5:49 to play.
The two teams continued to battle before the Cyclones went 8-for-10 from the foul line over a two-minute stretch and took a 72-71 lead with 2:32 to play. Young went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe during that stretch while senior
Tom Weiler was 3-for-4.
Brooklyn responded with an 9-4 run to close the game which allowed the visitors to claim an 80-76 victory. Wright had five points in that scoring stretch for the Bulldogs.
Brooklyn shot 55.2 percent from the field and went 10-for-18 from three-point range in the game. The Cyclones posted a 43.3 field goal percentage and connected on 11-of-23 chances from behind the arc. The Bulldogs held a 35-34 edge in the rebounding battle.
Young led Centenary with a career-high 20 points while Joseph finished with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Weiler and Lucibello each contributed 10 points while sophomore
Chris LaBelle had six points and a team-high eight assists.
Wright paced Brooklyn with 25 points and five assists.
The Cyclones are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 25 against Drew. That game was originally scheduled to be played at Drew but has been moved to Hackettstown and remains a 3 p.m. tip.
