ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Centenary University volleyball team battled back from a 2-0 deficit to force the match to a fifth and decisive set but Rosemont College ultimately claimed the 3-2 victory.
The Cyclones played a five set match for the first time since 2016.
The Ravens jumped out to an early lead with a 25-15 first set win and a 25-14 second set victory.
The third set proved to be a battle as there were seven ties in the early going. A kill from senior
Melissa Krueger tied Centenary and Rosemont at 8-8. That point also started an 8-0 run which ended with the Cyclones leading 15-8. Centenary pushed its lead to 17-10 on a kill from senior
Giani Montalvo. The two teams traded points before a block from sophomore
Leandra Garcia and a service ace from junior
Nicauris Veras sealed a 25-21 set win for the Cyclones.
Rosemont looked to have the momentum back in the fourth set as the Ravens scored eight of the first 11 points. A 5-0 run allowed the Cyclones to take a 14-13 edge in the set. Montalvo had a pair of kills while Krueger added one during that stretch. Rosemont briefly tied the set at 14-14 but that was the last point the Ravens would score in the set. Centenary closed the set on an 11-0 run for a 25-14 set victory, which tied the match at 2-2. Senior
Valentina Suizzo had four service aces during that key run that forced the match to a fifth set.
An 8-1 run allowed Rosemont to jump out to a 9-2 lead in the fifth set. The two teams traded points as a service ace from junior
Katie Alvarez pulled the Cyclones to within four, 13-9. Rosemont got the final two points it needed for a 15-9 set win and the match victory.
Alvarez led the Cyclones with seven kills and a season-high 14 digs while Krueger contributed 18 assists, seven digs and four kills. Suizzo had four service aces and five digs while Montalvo posted six kills.
Abigail Brooks led Rosemont with 10 kills while
Alyssa Springer added 23 assists.
The Cyclones get right back to work as they travel to Wilson on Wednesday, Oct. 10 for a 7 p.m. match.
