Daisuke Suzuki had a goal and an assist and senior
Devon Warne made five saves to help the Centenary University men's soccer team post a 4-0 win at Bryn Athyn on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
Warne's first save of the game, early in the second half, gave him 84 for the season and 300 for his career. Warne is the second player in program history to record 300 saves as a Cyclone. The other player to do so was
Jesse Goleman, who is a current assistant coach for the Cyclones. Goleman finished his career with 428 saves, which is the program record.
The Cyclones opened the scoring at the 4:55 mark as senior
Roger Fernandez hit Suzuki with a pass and he deposited it in the left corner of the net.
Centenary increased its lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute. Freshman
Besnik Hadzovic played a ball over the top that senior
Josh Weiss was able to volley into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
The Cyclones capped the first half scoring at 37:03 as senior
Jared Miele sent a ball through to fellow senior
Chris Cameron. Cameron struck the ball into the top corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Centenary carried that 3-0 lead into the half as the Cyclones held a 14-2 advantage in shots. Bryn Athyn took all three of the corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. Warne was not forced to make a save in the first half as the Lions got off just the two shots.
Warne made his 300th career save at the 49:59 mark as he rejected a shot from
Kevin Conroy.
Centenary pushed its lead to 4-0 at 64:01 as freshman
Jahn Lopez scored with Suzuki picked up the assist.
That was all the scoring for the game. Warne made two saves down the stretch while Shane McCurdy made three stops for Bryn Athyn.
Warne's five saves gave him the win in goal and allowed him to post his fifth shutout of the season. That gives Warne 16 shutouts for his career which is tied with
Jason Rogers for second most in career history at Centenary.
McCurdy made nine saves in the loss for Bryn Athyn.
Centenary finished with a 28-10 advantage in shots while Bryn Athyn held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
Seven Cyclones recorded at least one point in the game with Suzuki leading that group with three points (1g, 1a).
Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 20 when it hosts Cairn at 4 p.m. The Cyclones will honor their eight seniors prior to the start of the game and fans are encouraged to be at the field by 3:45 p.m. to help honor the seniors.
