HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Senior
Hamp Smith set the school record for single-game steals with 10 to lead the Centenary University men's basketball team to a 72-51 win over Clarks Summit University on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. The Cyclones, who snapped a five-game losing streak with the win, saw four players score in double figures.
Smith, who had five steals in each half, broke
Andrew Baker's record of eight steals which was set against Green Mountain in 2008.
Clarks Summit jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage but the Cyclones responded with a 15-2 run and took a 15-7 lead with 12:51 to go in the half. Freshman
Chris LaBelle contributed five points during that stretch while freshmen
Michael Young and
Mike Strazza each drained a three-pointer.
Clarks Summit tied the game at 17-17 on a three-pointer from
John McCloskey at 9:57.
Centenary closed the first half on a 14-7 run and took a 31-24 lead at the half. Freshman
Larry Joseph had six points during that stretch, including a monster dunk. Strazza contributed a pair of three-pointers as well.
Smith opened the second half with a steal on the opening inbounds play and scored a lay-up. That steal and bucket jump started a 10-4 run which gave the Cyclones a 41-28 lead with 14:26 to go in the game. Smith and Joseph each scored four points during that stretch.
The two teams continued to battle as a triple from junior
Stewart Lester gave Centenary a 46-31 lead with 12:12 left on the clock. The two teams traded baskets as a traditional three-point play from LaBelle allowed the Cyclones to take a 52-36 advantage with 8:54 to go.
Clarks Summit scored the next six points and cut the Centenary lead to ten, 52-42 with 6:35 remaining on the clock. The Cyclones responded with an 8-0 run of their own and pushed the lead to 18, 60-42 with 4:48 left in the game. Young accounted for five of the Cyclones' eight points during that stretch.
A pair of free throws from Strazza at 1:33 gave Centenary its largest lead of the game at 70-48. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch as the Cyclones claimed the 72-51 win.
Centenary shot 45.2 percent from the field and knocked down nine three-pointers in the game. Clarks Summit posted a 35.8 field goal percentage and connected on five shots from behind the arc. The Defenders held a 38-37 edge in the rebounding battle.
Joseph had a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the year. LaBelle contributed 14 points and nine assists while Young finished with 11 points. Strazza was the fourth Cyclones player in double figures as he contributed a season-high 11 points.
Smith had a balanced line for the Cyclones on the night. In addition to his 10 steals, he posted nine points, six rebounds and four assists. Smith is tied for the most steals in a single-game by a Division III player this season.
McCloskey led Clarks Summit with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Centenary wraps up a busy week by visiting Cabrini on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m.
