HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. –
Chris LaBelle,
Larry Joseph and
Hamp Smith combined for 40 points as the Centenary University men's basketball team fell to Immaculata University, 83-61 on Monday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
The Cyclones got out to a quick start as LaBelle knocked down a three-pointer and Joseph contributed a lay-up. The home team took a 5-0 lead with 18:02 to go in the half.
Immaculata used a 7-0 run to take a 7-5 advantage with 14:57 showing on the clock.
Brandon McCullough contributed five of the seven tallies during that run.
Centenary responded by scoring five of the next eight points and tied the game at 10-10 with 13:46 showing on the clock.
Michael Young was responsible for all five of the Cyclones' points during that stretch.
The two teams traded baskets before a pair of three-pointers gave the Mighty Macs a 21-14 advantage with 9:29 left in the half.
An 8-2 run by the Cyclones cut the Immaculata lead to two, 25-23 with 5:08 to go in the stanza. Joseph had half of the Centenary points during that scoring stretch.
The two teams continued to battle before Immaculata was able to score the final five points of the half and took a 37-27 lead at the half.
Centenary opened the second half on a 6-4 run as LaBelle connected on a pair of triples. That made it a 41-33 game with 16:55 to play.
The two teams traded baskets before back-to-back buckets from
Mike Strazza and Smith pulled Centenary to within nine, 55-46 with 9:43 to go in the contest.
The two teams battled down the stretch but Immaculata was able to maintain its double-digit advantage and claimed the 83-61 victory.
Both teams shot better than 40 percent from the field in the game. Immaculata posted a 45.9 field goal percentage and knocked down 10 three-pointers. Centenary shot 42.6 percent from the field and connected on 10-of-18 chances from the foul line. The Mighty Macs held a 38-32 advantage in the rebounding battle.
LaBelle tied for game-high honors with 18 points and added six rebounds. Joseph finished with 12 points and nine rebounds while Smith contributed 10 points with four rebounds.
Andre Allen came off the bench to lead the Mighty Macs with 18 points while
Matt Krewson added 14 points.
Centenary will have a quick turnaround as the Cyclones are back on the court Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. when they host Clarks Summit.
