HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Apr. 5, 2017) - Senior
Abby Voelkner (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) totaled seven points on five goals and two assists as the Centenary University women's lacrosse team fell to Gwynedd-Mercy University, 20-9 on Wednesday afternoon.
Lauren Mitros totaled eight points on six goals and two assists for the Griffins who improve to 2-8 overall and 2-3 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Senior
Priscilla Ortiz (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) totaled three points on three goals for the Cyclones who fall to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the CSAC.
Voelkner and freshman
Kassidy Scheuring (Hampton Bays, N.Y. / Hampton Bays) both tallied three points in the opening stanza that saw GMercyU hold Centenary to just five goals. The Griffins started the contest with four unanswered goals, before Voelkner netted back-to-back goals that included an assisted score from Scheuring, to cut the Cyclones deficit to 4-2 with 23:13 remaining. Scheuring would then score an unassisted goal of her own to keep Centenary within striking distance at 5-3. Gwynedd responded with another four unanswered, before Scheuring collected her second assist of the afternoon on Ortiz's first goal with 13:11 to play in the opening half. The Griffins scored five of the final six goals in the remaining 13:11 to hold a 14-5 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Voelkner scored three of the Cyclones four goals, including back-to-back goals midway through the half. GMercyU stretched their lead to a 10 goal margin, despite only collecting six scores, and never looked back.
Voelkner added five groundballs, a caused turnover and a draw control, while Ortiz totaled five groundballs, five draw controls and a caused turnover. Senior
Korin Karszen (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport South Manor) totaled three caused turnovers and two groundballs, while junior
Katie O'Connell (Nutley, N.J. / Nutley) and sophomore
Nicole Soriero (Monroe Township, N.J. / Monroe Township) both collected three groundballs and a caused turnover. Senior
Kelsey Barofski (White Township, N.J. / Belvidere), sophomore
Krysta Astengo (Clifton, N.J. / Clifton) and sophomore
Juliana Arias (Dover, N.J. / Morris Hills) all scooped up two groundballs apiece. Sophomore
Renee Hack (Old Bridge, N.J. / Bishop George Ahr) finished with five saves and five groundballs in 60 minutes of work between the pipes.
Hack climbed the record books again, moving into third all-time in minutes played at 1450, which surpasses
Tina Pagano (2003-05). Voelkner moved up as well, taking third place all-time in points at 230. She is now just 22 points shy of moving into second place all-time in points and just 12 goals shy of moving second place all-time in goals.
